Early life and background[edit]
Hemlata was born in Hyderabad as 'Lata Bhatt into an orthodox Marwari Brahmin family and spent her childhood in Calcutta.[3]
Around the time Hemlata was seven, Gopal Mallik, disciple of her father, recognised her singing talent and gave her an opportunity to perform live before large audience for very big musical concert organised by him at Rabindra Stadium of Calcutta. Her father agreed and decided to bring her to Bombay. In between, before her family left for Bombay, Ravindra Jain came to Kolkata for higher education in music and regularly used to visit their home to learn music from his Guru Pt. Jaichand Bhatt. After taking lessons, he played his own compositions in Bengali on the harmonium and little Hemlata, aged 12, used to sing them. Hemlata's mother Ambica Bhatt also encouraged her.
Career[edit]
Early career[edit]
In 1966, her family moved to Bombay, where they resided at Girgaon in southern Bombay, India. While in Bombay they visited Alla Rakha khan. Then her family shifted to Mahim, Bombay. Next, they visited Ustad Rais Khan, from whom she learned Ghazal singing.
Hemlata received an invitation from the music director Naushad Ali, who asked her to sing and was very impressed by hearing her voice that she was singing a non-filmic composition, then impressed Naushad Ali, who had promised Hemlata that he would give her an opportunity to sing in his films but advised her to wait till her voice matured. Then Hemlata signed five-year contract with Naushad Ali. She began her formal training of playback singing under Ali. On those days, Hemlata was in news as she was introduced by Ali, in the world of playback singing.
On very first day, she received invitation from music director Roshan through whom she did her first ever concert Roshan Night at the Shanmukhananda Hall, Bombay, India, in 1967. In the same week, she recorded her first ever song 'Tu Khamosh Main Purjosh' under composition of Usha Khanna for the film Roop Rupaiya. Her first released song was 'Dus Paise Mein Raam Le Lo' from the movie Ek Phool Ek Bhool (1968).
At the age of 14, she got an opportunity to record one Ghazals EP under the auspice of music director Khayyam. In 1970, HMV issued the first-ever cover versions in Hindi film music history in parallel with Polydor's original soundtracks to such films as The Train, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Sachaa Jhutha, Johny Mera Naam, Ek Nazar, Ek Bar Mooskura Do, and Jawani Diwani, employing such singers as Hemlata, Amber Kumar, and others.
Leading career[edit]
In the early 1970s, Ravindra Jain came to Bombay to try his luck. Before arrival of Ravindra Jain she already sang more or less 100/150 songs. Initially, Ravindra Jain used her voice for his debut movie 'Kanch Aur Heera (1972)' then for 'Rakh Aur Chingari (1974)', 'Geet Gata Chal (1975)', 'Salaakhen (1975)' and for 'Tapasya (1975)', which not have blazed the charts. However, Hemlata gained recognition when Ravindra Jain gave her a break for movie Fakira (1976) for song 'Sun Ke Teri Pukar'.
In the same year, Ravindra Jain used her voice for Rajshri Banner's movie Chitchor for which she won the Filmfare Award. Thereafter, Hemlata had established herself in various movies of Rajshri Productions in the 1980s and 1990s.
In association with Ravindra Jain, she had worked on many other songs. Among them is 'Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se'. According to the Binaca Geet Mala (a radio show that used to compile records of album sales), it became the number one song in the year 1978. Hemlata was also nominated for Filmfare award for the best female playback singer for this song. It has received millions of views on YouTube.[4] Hemlata sang on Jain's cassette album Sahaj Dhara (1991) dedicated to Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi, and sang songs from this album in two concerts in Brussels, Belgium in July 1992.[5][6]
She is the only Indian playback singer who has recorded maximum number of Hindi songs with K. J. Yesudas.
In the 1990s, Doordarshan had invited her to perform 'Tista Nadi Si Tu Chanchala'[7] along with K. J. Yesudas and 'Saath Jo Tera Yun Paya' for herself under the composition of Ravindra Jain which both songs were frequently broadcast on Doordarshan as a 'filler' in between programmes, especially in the evenings.
Performing career and albums[edit]
In collaboration with Ravindra Jain, she has widely sung for most movies based on Indian scriptures and many devotional albums such as Mastakabhishek (1982), as well as Jai Bahubali, Sahaja Dhara dedicated to Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi, and Aqeeda, and has also rendered the Ramayan Chaupaiyan, Kabir Doha, Sanskrit Bhaktamar Stotra], Sunder Kand and various devotional songs.

She has also given live concerts all over the world. She accompanied many live concerts with Mohammad Rafi and Mahendra Kapoor.
In recent years she had been doing a lot of charity shows, in India and abroad. She had performed along with Ataullah Khan for a charity show in London in aid of Imran Khan's cancer hospital. This was the first effort from an Indian singer for Pakistan. On a trip to London, Hemlata recorded two albums with Ataullah Khan. The first one titled, Sarhadein and the second one, Atta and Hemlata which has ghazals and geets. Then, she also recorded one pop album titled Ishq which featuring a fusion of Hindi and Punjabi folk.
Regarding these three albums, only Sarhadein was released by Tips.[10] The other two albums have not been released.
Ang Laga De Re Lyrics
All about the same time, when she happened to sing the song Sanwal Sanwal from Hero Hindustani. Hemlata claimed that Ataullah Khan and she gave this song to Anu Malik. “It is a folk song which had recorded in London and it is a rage there.' But here, when the rights were sold to T-Series, the company dubbed her song in someone else's voice.
She was the only Indian film playback singer who has started a musical academy in a country like America and her Academy is promoting spreading and broadcasting the typical Indian classical and folk music as well as Gurmat Sangeet from Hollywood Los Angeles to the entire world.
She was the only one Bollywood singer, who has been selected by the world community of Sikhs and the government of Punjab as well as the Holy Akal Takht to perform Gurmat Sangeet live composed in original Ragas for the celebration of 300 years of Sikh Khalsa Panth[11] at Shri Anandpur Sahib Akal Takht on 13 April 1999. Kini Tera Ant Na Paya was the only one album of Sikh Sangeet which was especially in her voice and inaugurated by the honourable Chief Minister of Punjab Shri Prakash Singh Badal and attended and blessed by honourable Prime Minister of India Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
In November 2010,[12] she was in news for filing FIR against the mother in law of Sonali Bendre for cheating Hemlata in a case of selling a bungalow in Lokhandwala, for Rs.25 million.

Plot[edit]
A young Virendra 'Viren' Pratap Singh (Anil Kapoor) travels to Rajasthan with his governess, affectionately called Daijaan (Waheeda Rehman) where he meets the beautiful Pallavi (Sridevi) and falls in love with her. Pallavi is the daughter of a businessman who had helped Viren's father when his business had gone down. Viren and Pallavi become friends but he is unable to express his love for her. Daijaan sadly watches Viren's disappointments.
After a property dispute and a major civil court case, Pallavi's father dies of a heart attack. Pallavi goes into depression and isolates herself in a nearby secluded town. Viren visits her to console her only to find her run to Siddharth, the man she loves and is romantically involved with. Viren is heartbroken, but out of respect for Pallavi's father's dying wish, he attends her wedding with Siddharth. However, a deeply saddened Viren decides to migrate far away and moves to London permanently. Tragedy strikes and a year later, Siddharth and Pallavi are involved in a fatal car crash. Their newborn baby girl, Pooja, survives and is placed in the care of Daijaan.
In London, Viren spends time with his childhood friend, Prem (Anupam Kher), who is well aware that Viren's heart pines for Pallavi. Over the course of time, and with much persuasion, Viren slowly hops back into reality and makes new friends, including a girlfriend and business partner, Anita (Dippy Sagoo), who upon finding out about Viren's past with Pallavi, constantly tries to get his attentions and feels envious.

Viren visits Rajasthan once every year for Pallavi's death anniversary, and to buy gifts for the young Pooja and also to say hello to his governess, Daijaan. He never spends time with Pooja because she reminds him too much of Pallavi, which makes Pooja very sad. A few years later, on one of his visits, Viren meets the grown-up Pooja and is shocked to see the resemblance she shares with her mother Pallavi. A couple of years later, Daijaan brings Pooja to visit London. She meets with Anita in Viren's house, and Anita soon realizes that Viren may never forget Pallavi because of how Pooja is a constant reminder of her.
On the other hand, Pooja is completely unaware of her striking resemblance to her mother. Pooja continues to develop feelings for Viren, whom she lovingly calls 'Kunwarji'. Prem also admires Pooja's bubbly and amiable personality and understands how much Pooja is attached to Viren. Although Prem likes the alliance, he is skeptical since Viren is still living in the past.
Gradually, Anita realizes that Viren might be falling for Pooja so she confronts Pooja and tells her that she is merely a responsibility for Viren. Anita also tells Viren that he should be ashamed of having feelings for a considerably younger Pooja.
In Viren's house, Pooja finds a pencil sketch and misunderstands that it is her when it really is her mother. When Viren returns she confesses her love for him assuming her affections are returned. A furious Viren finally reveals that he had only loved her mother. Daijaan comforts a heartbroken Pooja and relates Pallavi's story to her. Pooja begins to understand why Anita was being so possessive of Viren. A humiliated Pooja asks Daijaan that they return to India.
Back home, Daijaan and the community members start looking for a potential suitor for Pooja. Pooja agrees to marry on the condition that Viren is marries first. In London, Prem advises a confused Viren to marry Pooja, but Viren thinks it to be unfair to Anita who has waited for him for a long time. He decides to marry her but once the wedding invites are printed, he changes his mind much to Anita's dismay. Over a phone call, Pooja lies that she has been married. Viren knows that she is lying but decides to respond with his own lie that his wedding with Anita is also happening.
After many years of living apart and losing touch, a heartbroken Pooja has been trying to get on with her life as a storyteller in the villages of Rajasthan, narrating folktales using puppets. In London, a lonely Viren has been unable to forget Pooja. He travels to Rajasthan where he locates Pooja and Daijaan. Viren reveals that he realized, after she left London, that he had fallen in love with her, Pooja. At last, Pooja and Viren get together.

Reception, Analysis and legacy[edit]
Lamhe was widely acclaimed by film critics and is considered as one of the greatest Indian films of all time.It is one of the few films that picked up the Filmfare Award for Best Movie despite its lackluster business. Lamhe is also one of the biggest Bollywood hits in the overseas market and video circuit. Sridevi received widespread critical acclaim for her double-role as mother and daughter, winning the Filmfare Award for Best Actress among others. It finds a place in the Times Movie Guide's Top 100 Indian films.[citation needed] It is in the Outlook magazine's list of All-Time Great Indian films.[2] It has been cited as Yash Chopra's personal favorite among his films.[3]Times of India included it in its list of Top 10 Films of Yash Chopra describing it as 'a tale of love transcending the boundaries of time and space'[4] while Rediff called it 'Quite easily one of his most definitive films, Chopra surpassed his own findings of romance with the insightful, lovely Lamhe'.[5] Hrithik Sharma from El Viaje Reviews says 'The cinematography is a treat to eyes. Editing is crisp but with nearly 3 hours of run-time, it requires patience to watch the whole film. Only Yash Chopra could create this bold and unheard story in a way, that otherwise would have not been received well.'[6]
Sridevi played both mother and daughter cast in what iDiva described as 'another double role but it was unlike any played before'.[7] Hailed by Rediff as 'one of the most remarkable films of her career.. often considered a film way ahead of its time',[8] Her performance brought her much acclaim with BizAsia stating that 'Her rendition of both Pallavi and Pooja serves well in highlighting how versatile she is as an actress, playing contrasting characters in the same movie'.[9] Speaking to Karan Johar about the 'Making of Lamhe', Yash Chopra revealed 'When 90% of the London schedule was over, tragedy happened. Sridevi's father died.. She came back after 16 days and had to shoot a comedy scene.. At that moment she forgot everything and gave a wonderful scene. I understood that is the secret of her success.. Why she is what she is'.[10] Sridevi's folk dance number 'Morni Baga Ma' became a rage and was placed among the 'Top 5 Songs' of Yash Chopra by Hindustan Times.
Over the years Lamhe has become a cult classic.[11][12] Critic Rachel Dwyer wrote in her biography of the film-maker 'Yash Chopra's own favourite film, Lamhe ('Moments', 1991), divided the audience on a class basis: it was hugely popular with metropolitan elites and the overseas market, which allowed it to break even, but it had a poor box-office response (largely lower class, especially the repeat audience) because of its supposed incest theme'.[13]The Hindu reported that 'With shades of incest, Lamhe caused more than a flutter and remained the talk of the town'[14] while Sridevi herself admitted in an interview with Rajeev Masand that she found the subject 'too bold'.[15]Rediff described its failure as 'one of those bizarre, unexplained moments of cinema'.[5] Many film analysts, including Vikram Bhatt, felt that Lamhe was ahead of its time and if released at a later period, would have been commercially successful.[16]
